La Sécurité

Detour

art punk, egg punk, post-punk

In the deliberate choice to wander off path, like a child building with earnest curiosity, unexpected beauty emerges in the spaces between intention and accident. Through reduced visibility, vision sharpens as plans dissolve. No need to map it out – only patience reveals the way.

In the misty landscapes of Montreal's indie scene, La Sécurité's latest offering "Detour" emerges as a reflection on beautiful imperfection. The band embodies this philosophy firsthand, having formed as a serendipitous accident during the pandemic. They stand as a vibrant example of Montreal's bustling DIY scene, with members whose creative energy spills into multiple projects: Kenneth David Smith channels his artistry through his solo project Pressure Pin (Mothland) and egg punk band White Knuckle; Félix Bélisle lends his vocals to the acclaimed Choses Sauvages (Audiogram); Éliane Viens-Synnott curates Programmation À PART, a Montreal collective organizing DIY dance and performance art events in unconventional spaces; Melissa Di Menna runs the whimsical screen printing venture LES ROCHES QUI ROULENT; and Laurence Anne Charest-Gagné crafts ethereal soundscapes in her dream pop project Laurence-Anne (Bonsound).

The band is currently riding a wave of success, touring America alongside British veterans The Go! Team, who are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album "Thunder, Lightning, Strike." This tour coincides with La Sécurité's signing to the prestigious Bella Union label, helmed by Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins, Snowbird) who was attracted by the band's ability to reconnect him with his own post-punk roots, both musically and historically.

Building on the successful formula of "Stay Safe," "Detour" showcases a band growing in confidence and assertiveness. The track pulses with motorik rhythm and deep funk bass, while playful synth tones (ti tu tu tu tu, ti ti ti ti tu tu tu doo - oouuiiwoowiii) interweave with bouncy call-and-response guitar melodies, elevated by essential hand claps of friend Emmanuel Ethier.

The accompanying video, directed by Eliem & c. (@dirtanddaydream), playfully critiques psychobabble, suggesting that regressing into our inner child might be the most effective path to growth. The video follows the band's silly adventures through the city as they try to transport Kenny, who keeps falling asleep during the day. But no one is left behind within La Sécurité – give the little guy a break. The message is clear: there is no progression without imperfection. By avoiding the straightforward route, we confront our inner monsters and reconnect with our much needed childhood essence.
